Not all LVP is made of the same layers. Here is what matters inside the plank.
Two LVP planks can look identical on a store shelf yet perform completely differently once laid in your home. The difference comes down to the wear-layer thickness, the core chemistry (SPC vs. WPC), the depth of the click-lock joint, and the acoustic backing underneath.

UV Ceramic Bead & 20–28 mil Wear Layer
Cheap builder-grade vinyl uses a thin 6–12 mil clear coat that scuffs through in high-traffic kitchens. We spec 20–28 mil commercial wear layers infused with ceramic bead for scratch and stain resistance.

SPC Stone Core vs. WPC Foamed Core
SPC (Stone-Polymer Composite) blends limestone and virgin PVC for maximum dent resistance under islands and large dogs. WPC (Wood-Polymer Composite) adds foaming agents for a thicker, warmer, quieter feel in bedrooms and living areas.

How to clean every type of floor without ruining the finish
The wrong cleaner or a high-heat steam mop can cloud urethane, swell wood seams, or warp vinyl click-lock joints. Follow our field-tested care guide for each flooring material we sell and install.
01 · Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)
Daily / Weekly
Dry microfiber dust or vacuum (beater bar OFF): Pick up grit and pet hair before damp mopping so sand never grinds into the wear layer.
Damp Clean
Warm water + pH-neutral LVP cleaner: Mist lightly and mop with a flat microfiber pad. For textured grain, gently brush scuffs with a soft nylon pad.
Never Use
No steam mop on LVP or laminate floors: High-heat steam mops force vapor into click-lock seams and warp vinyl or laminate cores, while wax polish leaves a cloudy haze.
CRG Field Tip: Never place black rubber-backed mats on LVP — rubber antioxidants cause permanent yellow staining. Use woven or felt-backed mats instead.
02 · Solid Hardwood
Daily / Weekly
Best vacuum for hardwood floors & pet hair: Use a suction-only canister or cordless vacuum with a soft horsehair bare-floor brush head (beater bar OFF) and a dry microfiber dust pad.
Best Mop
How to clean hardwood floors (flat microfiber spray mop): Mist an NWFA-approved pH-neutral wood cleaner (Bona Pro or Pallmann) onto a flat microfiber mop pad and wipe with the grain.
Never Use
No wet string mops, steam mops, vinegar, or oil soaps: Standing water cups oak edges, vinegar dulls satin urethane, and oil soaps prevent future recoating.
CRG Field Tip: Keep indoor humidity between 35%–55% year-round and schedule a light screen-and-recoat every 3–5 years to renew the protective topcoat.
03 · Engineered Hardwood
Daily / Weekly
Sweep grit from micro-bevels: Wide planks have subtle V-groove bevels. Vacuum along the plank seams weekly so kitchen crumbs and grit don't collect.
Damp Clean
Atomized spray cleaner + dry buff: Use a low-moisture hardwood spray cleaner that evaporates within 30 seconds so moisture never sits in the end-joints.
Never Use
No abrasive green scrub pads, ammonia, or acrylic restorer: Factory aluminum-oxide finishes are ultra-hard; acrylic waxes create milky peeling patches.
CRG Field Tip: Put heavy-duty felt glides on every dining chair and barstool leg, and replace the felt pads once a year when grit embeds in them.
04 · Carpet & Carpet Tile
Daily / Weekly
CRI-approved vacuuming 2–3x weekly: Slow, overlapping passes pull dry soil out before shoes mat it into the yarn base. Use suction-only on loop pile.
Spill Care
Blot inward — never rub in circles: Press a clean white cotton towel onto spills from the outer edge inward, apply a neutral enzymatic spotter, and blot with cool water.
Never Use
No soapy rental machines or bleach spotters: Unrinsed detergent leaves a sticky film that attracts dirt twice as fast right where you cleaned.
CRG Field Tip: With modular carpet tile, if one 24"×24" tile gets permanently ruined by ink or pet stains, lift just that tile and pop in a fresh spare in 60 seconds.

What is the difference between SPC and WPC Luxury Vinyl Plank?
Both are 100% waterproof rigid-core floors, but their cores are formulated differently. SPC (Stone-Polymer Composite) uses a dense limestone-polymer core that resists heavy point loads and sunlight heat. WPC (Wood-Polymer Composite) uses a foamed composite core that feels slightly softer, warmer, and quieter underfoot.
Can LVP go over my existing hardwood, tile, or concrete slab?
Rigid-core LVP can be installed over concrete slabs (with a 6-mil poly vapor barrier and moisture test) or over flat plywood subfloors. When going over tile or uneven wood, we skim-coat or feather-patch transitions so telegraphing never occurs.
Can you match my stairs to my new LVP floor?
Yes. Instead of using raised metal or plastic overlap strips, we install custom flush-nosing LVP stair treads and clean white or matched risers so your stairs look like custom millwork.
How do you clean LVP floors without streaks or warping the click-lock joints?

What is the difference between LVP floors and laminate flooring in North Carolina humidity?
Laminate flooring uses a pressed wood-fiber core that can swell at the joints when exposed to standing water or kitchen leaks. Rigid-core LVP flooring uses a 100% waterproof SPC stone or WPC composite core that won't swell from pet bowls, wet shoes, or Raleigh humidity.
